The Importance of Scheduling Annual, Eye Exams

The Importance of Scheduling Annual, Eye Exams

A few years ago, my dear maternal grandmother visited an optometrist. After thoroughly examining my grandmother’s eyes, this medical professional informed her that she had cataracts in both of them. Concerned, my grandmother immediately made an appointment with a surgeon. The two surgeries to remove the cataracts from my grandmother’s eyes were successful. Scheduling annual eye exams is crucial. During these appointments, your optometrist will check for potentially harmful conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, retinal detachment, nearsightedness, and farsightedness. On this blog, I hope you will discover the most important reasons you should visit your eye doctor every year. Enjoy!

Fit Issues With Your Glasses To Discuss With Your Eye Doctor

Stella Harvey

If you have just started wearing glasses, then you should know that you need to see an eye doctor about once every year. Before your eye exam, you should think about the way that your glasses fit so that you can speak to the eye doctor about changes that can be made to your glasses. Keep reading to learn about a few of the things that you should bring up with the doctor.

Eye Pain or Discomfort

If your glasses are causing you eye pain or discomfort when you wear them, then you should speak with your eye doctor about this. There are many reasons why you may be feeling uncomfortable and your optometrist can write a prescription to assist with this. In some cases, the pupil distance may not have been accurate with your previous prescription. This measurement is used to center the lenses within the frames for proper focus. And, your optometrist will take a new pupil measurement to ensure accuracy.

Discomfort may be due to reflections on the lenses themselves. Lenses with anti-reflective coatings can be ordered to resolve this issue. And, your optometrist may also suggest glasses that minimize computer eye strain if you use a computer for work on a daily basis. These glasses are ones that reflect blue light.

If you think that sensitivities may be caused by bright sunlight, then transition lenses may be suggested that darken when you go outside. If this is not something that you want, then ask your optometrist about glasses that allow you to clip-on sunglasses.

Slipping Glasses

If you have trouble with your glasses because they slip down your nose or fall off your face, then you should speak with your optometrist about this. In this case, you may be advised to choose glasses with silicone nose pads instead of ones that have no pads at all. And, your optometrist can teach you how to change the pads periodically with new ones that screw or snap into place as the old ones start to wear out.

In addition, the professional will make sure that the glasses are adjusted to your temples. This occurs at the time of fitting where the arms are gently warmed and molded to fit over your ears. When this fitting is performed, make sure to move your head back and forth. The glasses should not move from their position on your face.

Speak with an optometrist to learn more about how specific issues with your glasses can be addressed. Look for an eye doctor in your area.
